General Information
The Department of Public Utilities is a
self-supporting public service organization founded in 1879. It treats Portsmouth's
drinking water and maintains the water lines that deliver it to you. The Department also
maintains the sanitary sewer lines and sewage pumping stations which carry wastewater away
from your home or business. The units that make up the Department of Public Utilities and
provide its services are:

Customer Service Office serves
the customers of the Utility by reading meters, providing bills for services rendered,
collecting revenue and providing other customer related services.

Operations Division operates and
maintains Portsmouth's water transmission and distribution system (fire hydrants, valves,
water tanks, water mains and water pumping stations) and the sewage collection system and
transmission system (sewage mains, manholes, sewage pumping stations). Operations
provides a 24 hour emergency response for water and sewer related problems in the Public
Utilities owned systems.

Water Production Division is
responsible for the operation, maintenance and protection of the Department's water
resources (reservoirs, deep wells, watershed, forestry and fishing programs and the
water treatment plant) and for insuring the production and delivery of high
quality drinking water through its Water Quality programs (laboratory, testing, monitoring
and backflow and cross-connection prevention).

Administration & Engineering Office
supports, leads and directs the Department's operational divisions and provides project
design, construction management and contract administration for the Department's
construction projects. It maintains records of underground water and sewage main
locations.
