Water Main
Replacement Planned!
Our next 2" water pipe replacement project
will be on the 2000 and 2100 Block of Liverpool Street. This
work will start in April and will continue until complete. These
2" galvanized pipes were originally installed in 1906.
The new replacement water pipes being installed are made of high
density polyethylene pipe which is corrosion resistant and has
an indefinite life expectancy. As part of this program, we are
also replacing the individual 3/4" house services from the new
pipe up to your meter. The new replacement services will be
installed using copper pipe meeting current City standards.
We will do our best to minimize any inconvenience to you and
when an interruption in your water service is required, we will
notify you in advance.
If you have any questions, please call our field office at
393-8561 and ask for Fred Riddick, our Water Distribution
Superintendent, or Frank Wilson, our Operations Manager.
Eight (8) miles of the 350 mile Portsmouth Water Distribution
System is galvanized water pipe. This 2" pipe ranges in age from
20 to 100 years old. These small diameter water mains serve some
of our neighborhood water customers. The majority of leaks
experienced in the system are in these 2" pipes. In addition to
leaking, internal corrosion of these pipes can create water
quality, quantity and pressure problems. Over the past several
years, the Public Utilities Department has been engaged in a
program to replace these 2" neighborhood galvanized water mains.
So when you see our crews working in front of your home, they
are working to provide you with a new water main and the best
supply of fresh clean water possible. If you have any questions,
please call our office or just take time to ask our employees in
the field. They will be happy to explain the installation
process to you.
